Regattas of Mauritius

Essential events not to be missed, the regattas of Mauritius are an opportunity to discover the traditions and folklore of fishing villages where competition and celebration are at the rendezvous. That of Mahébourg in the south-east of the island, first port village of Mauritius, attracts exceptionally large crowds every year. This is an opportunity for fishermen to demonstrate their know-how and their ability on the sea, especially against other fishermen of the island, those of Grand Gaube in particular, the other fishing village in the north of the island.

The regatta is a race aboard local canoes. For the occasion the fishermen dress them with the most beautiful sails, generally in ecru cotton, all more colorful than the others. Each boat has its story and this is illustrated in the way they are decorated and personalized with originality. These bright colors in contrast with the blue of the lagoon and the sky offer a magnificent show.

The race is classified in different categories according to the size of the canoes. The crowd gathered on the shore, shouts encouragement to the fishermen to finally cheer the big winners at the finish line.

This popular gathering takes place in a festive atmosphere, to the sound of the music of local artists and the rhythm of the sega. The regatta also consists of a culinary festival where you will have the opportunity to taste traditional Creole dishes such as faratas, curries of all kinds or the famous pig salmi. This is also an opportunity for all local artisans to present and sell their creations, small souvenirs that you can take home.

The regattas are happening pretty much every month. This is an opportunity to spend a beautiful day immersing yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the cultural traditions of Mauritius and take beautiful colorful photos.
