The visit of the Supreme Pontiff to Mauritius on 9 September has been confirmed. Pope Francis will, therefore, be the second Pope to set foot on Mauritian soil, thirty years after Saint John Paul II. Leading a press briefing with Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth on Wednesday, March 27, Cardinal Piat stressed the national character of this visit: “It is not only a visit of Pope Francis to Catholics but to the Mauritian people, in all their religious diversity. And we are very happy that this is the case.
The Pope will make his 31st apostolic journey to Mozambique, Madagascar and Mauritius from 4 to 10 September 2019, visiting the cities of Maputo in Mozambique, Antananarivo in Madagascar and Port-Louis in Mauritius. The highlight of Pope Francis’ visit to Mauritius will be a high mass at Marie-Reine de la Paix.
The Pope will come to Mauritius for the day of September 9 and will return to Madagascar on the same day. By visiting the churches of the Indian Ocean, Pope Francis will come to the small peripheral islands and thus will put into practice his concern for a church that cares about the most distant. For this reason, Christians from Reunion Island, Rodrigues, Seychelles, and the Comoros Archipelago, accompanied by their bishop, will be present in Mauritius on this occasion.
A Vatican delegation was in Mauritius from 14 March to 16 March to identify the location and examine the feasibility of the events planned for the day of 9 September. This delegation was led by Bishop Mauricio Rueda, organizer of the pontifical trips. She had a working day on March 15 with the diocesan and government teams. Site visits have been organized in places where Pope Francis is expected to visit. For security reasons, details of the Pope’s movements will not be disclosed at this time. Further working meetings will be organized with, among others, Vatican security officials in the coming months. The Mauritian teams will have to travel to Rome and Vatican delegations will also travel to Mauritius.
